Orpington, Kent, 23rd March, 2008, U.K.
Time: 20.10PM
Last Sunday evening I was driving my vehicle along the A21 between Orpington and Bromley, Kent when I noticed possibly 6 to 8 dull orange glowing lights in the sky to my right hand side, at a guess about mile high.
Although this location is near Biggin Hill Airport, I am very familiar with the type of aircraft that fly regularly into the airfield, and being a past holder of a Private Pilots Licence, I really am aware of what an aircraft looks like in the dark, and these lights were no aircraft and Biggin Hill Airport never has a queue like this anyway, not that I even consider the fact that it was an aircraft, but just making a point about the normal air traffic at Biggin.
Unfortunately, I was unable to stop my vehicle due to the type of road I was on, very busy and no hard shoulder etc., however, I did stop about 2 minutes later but there was no sign of any of the lights I had seen. My sighting was also confirmed by 2 passengers in my vehicle, who incidentally were complete strangers to me, who I am now glad also witnessed what I saw.
The lights were in some sort of a row, although not in a direct line, and owing to their diminishing size, I assume that they were strung out over a few miles. If, as some suggest, they were aircraft, then why had they all vanished 2 minutes later when some were obviously some considerable distance away and would still be visible after 2 minutes or so. I find the whole thing rather baffling and get very little support from anyone who I have tried to explain this to.
I am 60 years of age, level headed, don't "bury my head in the sand" and have a very open mind on virtually anything, but this has beaten me totally.
Any ideas?
